Scholarships

There are two separate scholarship opportunities available through for high school students planning to study engineering and one for current UAA Engineering students.

High School Student Scholarships

Through AEEF, the Alaska Society of Professional Engineers (ASPE) funds scholarships for high school seniors who wish to pursue a degree in engineering. Scholarships are awarded state-wide and at the local level in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau and are funded by the local engineering communities. By submitting this one application, you will be considered for the following scholarships:

  • One $2,000 AEEF Scholarship from all state-wide applicants, awarded as $1,000 for two years.
  • One $1,500 ASPE Scholarship from all state-wide applicants.
  • One or more ASPE Regional Engineering Week (E-Week) scholarships that vary in quantity and amount based on fundraising efforts in each of the three state regions: Anchorage, Juneau, and Fairbanks.
  • New this year, Anchorage E-Week will be awarding scholarships in two separate regions based on graduating enrollment by school districts (more details via the application link). At a minimum, one $500 scholarship will be awarded in each region.

Application criteria are as follows:

  1. AEEF scholarships are limited to high school seniors pursuing a degree in engineering.
  2. Scholarship recipients must be enrolled in an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc (ABET) accredited engineering program at the college or university they attended.

Funds awarded will be sent directly to the college/university financial aid office. Should scholarship winners not attend an ABET accredited engineering program within three years of the award, the scholarship may be forfeited.

Required application documentation includes:

  1. One letter of recommendation from a teachers, guidance counselor or school administrator.
  2. One letter of recommendation from your employer, internship, coach, or volunteer organizer. This individual should be able to comment on your leadership abilities, teamwork skills and work ethic.
  3. Essay (maximum of 500 words). Describe your interest in an engineering education/career.
  4. Official school transcripts in a sealed envelope must be received, or postmarked, prior to the deadline for the application to be accepted. Transcripts should be mailed and not emailed.
  5. SAT or ACT Composite Score. Photocopies of official SAT or ACT score sheets are acceptable.

UAA Student Scholarship for current students

Through AEEF, the Alaska Society of Professional Engineers (ASPE) Anchorage Chapter funds scholarships for recipients enrolled in an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc (ABET) accredited engineering program at the University of Alaska, Anchorage (UAA). This ASPE/AEEF scholarship is specifically for engineering students attending their junior or senior year at UAA. At least one scholarship for $2,000 will be awarded this year, the first year of many to come, and presented at the Anchorage Engineers Week Banquet on February 25, 2017. In order to qualify for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  1. Be in good standing and enrolled full-time at UAA as a junior or senior in an ABET accredited engineering program;
  2. Be a student member of ASPE (Applicants may join for free via the National Society of Professional Engineers at https://www.nspe.org/membership/type-membership/student-membership.
  3. Be a U.S. citizen and resident of Alaska;
  4. Have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or greater;
  5. Are not receiving a full scholarship (tuition, books, and room and board); and
  6. Submit a timely and complete application by the deadline.
